It’s been a busy year for Isa Mother City Rollers and there is no better time than now to look back at what we have achieved in 2023, and to contemplate what we want to achieve in 2024.

We can hardly believe that a whole year has already flow by – and what a busy year it has been!
At the close of 2022, Isa Mother City Rollers was without a venue and we were working hard to lock something down for the new year. Despite many bumps along the Venue-Finding-Road, we are pleased to be ending 2023 on a much better note: having secured a safe, indoor skating space in Gardens that we have been enjoying skating in.
One of the core tenets of our club is to promote and encourage the enjoyment of roller skating, and to grow a broader community which encourages skating as a dynamic and lifelong sport. This year, we have furthered this goal through hosting our weekly free sessions outside Green Point Stadium, where we teach skills, drills, dance moves and offer support to skaters of all levels. We have also joined in on community events both within and outside of the skate community, with events such as the Cape Town Carnival, Regent Road Socials, World Wide Roll Out Day and the various Halloween events.
For our own club community, we offered short courses on Edges, Jumping, Shuffle Skate and Synchro Skate. This was then followed by the new class structure which allows more flexibility in having new people join, as well as covers a variety of skills throughout each month and thus ensures a continuous improvement of skating skills.
2023 also saw our club gain in skills training through Roller Sport South Africa, with training sessions run by the unmatched Wendy Gila for both our club members as well as our committee and coaches. IMCR committee members completed an RSSA Administation Course, and then put those skills to good use by getting a club Snapscan account as well as registering the club as a Non Profit Company and starting down the road of applying for tax exemption from SARS. Two of our coaches completed their Level 1 Coaching Certification through RSSA, and we have a third coach waiting to take his final test.
But that was not all! Isa Mother City Rollers got a sponsorship from Fieldbar in 2023 – along with a fun photoshoot and some gorgeous (and IMCR branded) Fieldbars. We also got ourselves branded in new club merch with T-shirts, leggings, jackets and stickers; ran a Shuffle Skate event at Rollercade and a Learn to Roll event with collaboration from On The Roll; and we got ourselves a spot in the main parade of the 2024 Cape Town Carnival!
If we could do all that in one year, just think of what we can achieve in 2024!
WHAT AWAITS US IN 2024?
- IMCR is performing in the main parade of the 2024 Cape Town Carnival in March.
- Artistic skate classes on Tuesday evenings in Gardens to improve the artistic skate levels of Cape Town skaters.
- Free, open skate sessions, including skills and drills offerings, on Monday evenings in Green Point (weather and other events permitting).
- A focus on getting opportunities for IMCR members to take Roller Sport South Africa’s Future Stars Level 1 Tests.
- A focus on getting IMCR members entered into the 2024 SA Championships in Artistic Roller Skating.
- Continuing to promote the enjoyment of roller skating and to foster an inclusive and welcoming community.
A message from the 2023 Committee:
It has been an intense year, but one in which we feel that Isa Mother City Rollers made great strides as a club. We are so proud to be a part of this community and we find inspiration in every one of our skaters. If a club is only as good as its members, then our club is fantastic!
