On Saturday the 16 March the Green Point Fanwalk came alive with the vibrant colors and energy of the Cape Town Carnival 2024. Among the myriad of performers, floats, and spectators, the Isa Mother City Rollers made their mark, bringing roller skating to the main parade for the first time.
The Cape Town Carnival, a celebration of creativity, culture, and community, is one of the most anticipated events on the city’s calendar. Held annually in March, it draws people from all walks of life to the streets of Cape Town to revel in the festivities and is free to attend. From dazzling costumes to pulsating music, the carnival is a feast for the senses, showcasing the rich tapestry of South African heritage and talent. The 2024 theme was “Lekker” and included community performance groups from throughout Cape Town.
For the Isa Mother City Rollers, this year’s carnival held special significance. After rolling through the Pre-parade last year, in 2024 we applied for a performance spot in the main procession, and were allocated to the “Into The Deep” pod. Months of rehearsals and collaborative workshops built up to the event and the final performance was a testament to the spirit of collaboration and dedication our club consistently shows. Countless hours of rehearsals and planning went into perfecting the routine, made possible by the IMCR Committee, Group Leader Andrea Stallbom; 2iC Dumisa Lengwati; Choreographer Sarah Oliver; and the inspiring team of skaters.
Dressed as a school of fish in “Into the Deep”, the Isa Mother City Rollers excited onlookers with dance moves on skates. We performed alongside the Michelle Davids Dance Group, Ilanga Elihle Youth Project and the Bella Donnas Belly Dancing group. View all the community groups in the Cape Town Carnival here.
The 2024 Carnival performance was a thrill and huge accomplishment for the Isa Mother City Rollers club. Not only did we dance on wheels for a large Cape Town audience but we also worked with inspiring dance groups, choreographers, costume designers and fantastic volunteers.
